Publishing Papers

Correspondence, Journals, and Memoirs:

Letter from John Johnstone to George Boyd.
28 June 1826.
Clan-Albin was published at the very worst possible time, only two weeks before Guy Mannering! It was neither advertised, pushed, nor puffed, yet about 1400 copies were sold in the course of a few months.
Source: E, Acc 5000/192.
Notes: Letter is addressed from 10 Newington Place. The letter concerns negotiations over Christian Isobel Johnstone’s third novel Elizabeth de Bruce (EN2 1827: 44). Scott’s Guy Mannering is EN2 1815: 46.
